Make the most of your data and download

The demand for data in our rural communities has grown 500% in the last six years, and it’s only increasing. As everything moves to the digital realm, we’ve unlocked our data caps between the hours of 12am and 8am daily.

With everything being online these days – school, work, shopping, music, movies, TV, games, calling – we recommend scheduling your software updates and downloading all of the above within these hours.

Netflix: queue download

The easiest way to reduce your data usage is to download during off-peak times (read 12am to 8am), when rural broadband data is unlimited.

Unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t allow scheduling of downloads (unless you want to get quite creative with batch files), meaning it will only download one file at a time, so queuing these as close to 12am as possible means the majority of data downloaded will tick into unlimited hours.

We’ve put together a handy step-by-step to get you on your way:

1) Download the Netflix app from Play Store for Android or App Store for iOS. You can also download on your desktop from the Microsoft or Apple Store. Once you sign up, click on TV Shows.

2) Once you are in TV Shows > Click on Genres > Available for download.

3) Scroll down or across to your favourite TV show.

4) Scroll down to the required episode or movie and click on the Download button (downward arrow to the right). Netflix will only download one file at a time. If you’ve clicked on multiple, these will be added to the queue.

5) The episode or movie will begin downloading.

6) You can find your downloads in the bottom menu.

7) Make sure smart downloads are turned off as they automate downloading of the next episode when you are done watching one. To turn it off, click on ‘More’ in the bottom right.

8) Downloads > Smart downloads > Off.
