Planting for a Greener Future

At Lightwire, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to reduce our impact on the environment and give back to the communities we serve. Since 2021, we’ve proudly partnered with John Jackson and his family on their hill-country sheep and beef farm in Te Akau, Waikato, to support riparian planting – an initiative that restores native vegetation along waterways.

Why Riparian Planting Matters

Riparian zones are the strips of land beside rivers, streams, and wetlands. Planting these areas with native trees and shrubs helps filter sediment and nutrients before they reach the water, reduces erosion, and creates vital habitats for native birds, bees, and insects. With beehives already thriving on the Jackson property, these efforts not only boost biodiversity but also strengthen the wider ecosystem.

Every year between June and August, John and his team of six dedicate a full day to planting hundreds of native trees. With Lightwire’s support, this year alone, they planted 600 seedlings – species carefully chosen to suit the wet gullies and waterways of Te Akau. These included Mingimingi, Coprosma rigida, Hukihuki, Kahikatea, Kanuka, Totara, Cabbage Tree, Ribbonwood, and Karamu. Over time, these plants will grow into flourishing native bush, improving water quality and creating a healthier environment for generations to come.

A Partnership That Grows Each Year

John has welcomed the partnership with Lightwire, noting the shared values behind both his farming work and Lightwire’s mission of connecting rural communities. “It’s great to team up with a company that not only provides internet connectivity to places like Te Akau but also invests in projects that protect the land,” says John.

The Next Generation of Farmers

The Jackson family connection to the land runs deep. John’s son, Hugh, is the fourth generation on the farm, which began with 240 hectares purchased by his great-grandfather after World War II. Today, the property spans 1950 hectares, running Friesian bulls and 2,500 breeding ewes.

Hugh’s dedication to farming excellence was recognised in 2025 when he won the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, representing Waikato/Bay of Plenty. He also serves as Chair of the Hamilton City Young Farmers Club, showing leadership not just on the land but in the wider farming community.

Thank You for Supporting Sustainability

Our tree-planting initiative wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support of our customers, partners, and employees. Every connection you make with Lightwire helps us invest in projects like this, offsetting carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable future for New Zealand.

We look forward to continuing our work with John, Hugh, and the team in Te Akau, watching these native plants grow into thriving ecosystems – one tree at a time.
