How Does your internet Connection stack Up?
We’re always looking for ways to make sure you’re getting the best experience from your Lightwire Fixed Wireless broadband service – and now we’d love your help.
We’re supporting the Commerce Commission’s Measuring Broadband New Zealand programme. It’s an independent initiative that tests broadband performance across the country – and they’re currently looking for volunteers.
why is it important?
Lightwire is a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) using fixed wireless technology. This is different from 4G Fixed Wireless as reported in Measuring Broadband NZ.
Measuring Broadband NZ doesn’t currently include Fixed Wireless (WISP) connections in their reports because there aren’t enough samples nationwide.
By taking part, you’ll help build a better picture of how your WISP internet connection compares to other technologies. This means greater transparency and a fairer comparison – you’ll see how your connection stacks up.
What’s involved?
If you’re keen simply register your interest on the link at the end of this email.
If selected, you’ll receive a small device called a Whitebox to plug into your modem. It measures things like:
Download and upload speeds
Video streaming quality
Online gaming performance
No impact on your service – the Whitebox device runs quietly in the background, doesn’t track your browsing history, and won’t affect your internet use.

Good to know
- This programme is run independently by the Commerce Commission, not Lightwire.
- Selection for participation is at the discretion of the Commerce Commission.
- Testing is run by SamKnows – the Commerce Commission’s data and analysis partner.
- There is no charge to participate and you can opt out at any time.
What happens after I sign up?
- SamKnows will email you directly to inform if you have been selected for the programme.
- They’ll courier you the Whitebox device to you at no cost.
- You’ll plug it in, and that’s it – the device handles the rest.
- If you ever want to stop, simply return the Whitebox to us for recycling.
